Thousands of doctors throughout Ireland will gather in Dublin today for a conference, outlining their new legal requirements.

From May 1, professional competence schemes will be introduced for those working in the medical profession.

Today's Medical Council of Ireland conference will be opened by the Health Minister Dr James Reilly.

President of the Medical Council, Professor Kieran Murphy said the new regulations will help improve patient safety.
