Government establish Peatlands Council

The Government is establishing an independent non-statutory Peatlands Council.

It will honour a commitment set out in the Programme for Government and should help Ireland to respond to the EU's Habitat's Directive.

The directive sets out how Ireland must protect and conserve important peatland habitats.

Discussion are to begin immediately with interested parties.
