Some Council staff enjoying 42 holiday days

It has emerged today that some senior Council staff are entitled to up to 42 days' holiday per year.

That is excluding the nine public holidays which all workers are entitled to.

The IMPACT trade union said that it is concerned by the figure, revealed on the same day that officials from the IMF return to Ireland to discuss our bailout programme.

However, spokesperson Peter Nolan says that the savings involved if the holidays were to be reduced would not amount to much.

"I'd suggest that that would result in savings of about 1,200 days per year," he said.

"At the moment, 7,000 jobs have been lost in local Government in the last two years - that equates with 161,000 (days)."
