Man charged with murdering mother on Mother’s Day

A man accused of stabbing his mother to death on Mother’s Day appeared in court today charged with her murder.

John Charles Coburn allegedly killed 53-year-old Lynn Coburn in the Co Antrim village of Connor on Sunday.

The 33-year-old is also charged with attempting to murder his younger brother Andrew Coburn (aged 31) in the same incident at a house in the Rossburn Manor development.

The accused, from Rossburn Manor, appeared in the dock of Antrim Magistrates’ Court today.

Balding and thick-set, and wearing a navy blue T-shirt, Coburn spoke only to confirm his name during the brief hearing.

Detective Sergeant Tom Kennedy told District Judge Robert Alcorn that he could connect the accused with the two charges.

His solicitor made no application for bail.

District Judge Alcorn remanded Coburn in custody for four weeks to appear at Ballymena Magistrates’ Court via video link.
