Assistant Garda Commissioner appalled by speed camera van arson attack

The Assistant Garda Commissioner in Traffic has described as an "outrageous act" the suspected arson attack on a speed camera van in Co. Wicklow.

The GoSafe van was set alight on the Gorey Road on the old N11 just outside Arklow at 7.30pm on Sunday night.

The van was completely destroyed but the person who was inside escaped uninjured.

There have been several arson attacks on mobile speed cameras since they were rolled out across the country last November.

Assistant Garda Commissioner in Traffic John Twomey said it's a very troubling development: "It's an outrageous act on a place of work which could have resulted in a fatality.

"A full investigation has been ordered into the incident and I think it's particularly troubling when one considers what the aim of that person inside that van was doing.

"He's out there trying to reduce speed on our roads, reduce fatalities and serious injuries and prevent further devastation inflicted on families."
