Man held in connection with killing at laundrette

Police investigating the killing of a woman shot in a laundrette in a seaside town have arrested a man in his 40s.

The woman, aged in her 50s, was shot at premises off Harbour Hill, just behind an apartment block in Portstewart, Co Derry, when a man walked in and opened fire.

Police sealed off the location, which is near the town’s seafront promenade, as part of a follow-up investigation.

The arrested man is understood to have been taken into custody in the town of Kilrea 20 miles away, and has been taken to Antrim police station for questioning.

Assembly member John Dallat said the killing in Portstewart had sent shockwaves throughout the peaceful town.

“My deepest sympathy goes to the family of this woman who was going about her work when she was fatally wounded by the assailant who entered the laundrette and killed her with a single shot,” he said.

He added: “I would ask anyone who has any information to contact the PSNI immediately.”
