Taoiseach Enda Kenny tonight said he is confident that Ireland can renegotiate its bailout plan with the EU.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny tonight said he is confident that Ireland can renegotiate its bailout plan with the EU.

Speaking after a meeting with EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barosso, Mr Kenny said the Commission fully supported Ireland's call for a lower interest rate.

Mr Kenny described the hour-long discussion - his first European engagement at Taoiseach - as "positive" and "frank".

A spokesperson said the Commission supported Ireland on the issue of renegotiating the interest terms of the EU bailout, while President Barroso was said to have expressed an understanding that it was of key importance for Ireland.

Mr Kenny also said that a compromise on Ireland's corporation tax rate or on tax harmonisation was not on the agenda, contrary to some reports, and he would not concede to it.
