A 40-year-old man remains in Garda custody in connection with a shooting in Dublin.

He was arrested following violent scenes at Smithfield Horse Market on Sunday.

Two men suffered gunshot wounds, while another was struck with a slash hook during the incident.

Last night, Dublin City Councillors called on the incoming Government to introduce legislation to shut down the horse fair on health and safety grounds.

An emergency motion was put forward calling on officials in the council to ban the horse market in Smithfield temporarily, but it was rejected.
