A 29-year-old Cork man has been jailed for five years for the manslaughter of a homeless Polish man in Cork city last year.

Connie Horgan, a native of Midleton but living at St Vincent's Hostel, Anglesea Street, admitted hitting Ariel Cegielka with a vodka bottle in the head causing him to fall back and facture his skull.

He died three days later in hospital.

At Cork Circuit Criminal Court, Judge Con Murphy noted that Horgan had pleaded guilty at the outset and accepted that his remorse was genuine as he sentenced him to eight years with the final three suspended.
