The Fine Gael party has sent a warning to banks owned or guaranteed by the State that they should not try to defy the party's plans to curb interest rate hikes.

It was reported today that banks may increase rates sooner than expected in a bid to recoup losses, after Permanent TSB confirmed plans to raise its variable rate by 1%.
