Efforts underway to save Donegal bakery jobs

Efforts are underway today to save as many jobs as possible at Gallagher's Bakery in Ardara, in Co Donegal.

Yesterday, the firm announced that it is to lay off 124 staff as it closes its Cuisine de France frozen production line in Donegal.

It is understood economic development agency Údarás na Gaeltachta approved a funding package for the company last year, worth €750,000, but it was never drawn down.

Management and executive members of Údarás na Gaeltachta will meet later.

Donegal Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill, who is also an elected member to the board of Údarás, said he was hopeful some jobs could be saved.

"I would certainly hope that all of the jobs can be saved," he said, …but ultimately it remains a decision for company management."
