Veteran FF TDs bow out

Two more long-standing Fianna Fáil TDs have announced that they are quitting politics.

Noel Ahern - brother of former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern - last night withdrew from a selection convention in Dublin North West.

Cabinet Minister Pat Carey will contest the constituency for Fianna Fáil.

Meanwhile in Cork East Ned O'Keeffe has announced he is retiring.

His son, Councillor Kevin O'Keeffe, was selected last night to run alongside Deputy Michael Ahern.

Meanwhile speculation continues as to the intentions of Taoiseach Brian Cowen.

Reports this morning suggested Mr Cowen may not stand in Laois-Offaly, with his brother Barry being tipped as a possible candidate.

However neither the Taoiseach nor his brother have confirmed or denied the speculation.
