The number of overseas visitors to Ireland is down by one million on last year's figures.

The number of overseas visitors to Ireland is down by one million on last year's figures.

The Irish Tourist Industry Confederation has said that 5.5 million people came here in the last 12 months.

In its end of year review the group said the sector was hit badly by the sterling exchange rate.

The confederation added however that we are improving our competitiveness - but it will take time to see the results.
