A third person has died following a three-car crash in Co Monaghan.

A third person has died following a three-car crash in Co Monaghan.

The collision occurred just outside Carrickmacross on the N2 Dublin Road at around 7pm last night.

Two 27-year-old men were killed in the crash, while a 39-year-old woman died in hospital this morning.

The three-car crash happened around 3kms outside Carrickmacross on the N2 Dublin Road between Carrickmacross and Ardee.

The two men, who were killed instantly, were travelling in the one car.

The 39-year-old woman died from her injuries in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda in the early hours of this morning.

Three other men were seriously injured in the accident, two of them critically.

Two of the men were in the same car as the men who died.

Two children, who were passengers in another car, were also taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

The section of the road where the accident occured will remain closed for a number of hours today with diversions in place while a technical examination is carried out.
