Abandoned horses have found themselves unlikely benefactors after a story in the New York Times.

A report by the paper into horses abandoned because of the downturn in the economy touched hearts in the US and donations have been made to the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The money has been arriving after a report in the New York Times on December 20 which said tens of thousands of horses and ponies were falling victim to the recession.
