Van hits garda car after Mitchelstown crash
A garda car parked at an accident scene in north Cork this morning was struck by a van.
The two accidents on the fast lane of the northbound section of the Mitchelstown bypass resulted in the closure of the roadway this morning.
Gardaí said today that nobody was injured in either incident.
However, they warned motorists to travel with caution at all times and to expect the unexpected, particularly in the current cold snap.
Gardaí were responding to a collision between two cars at the Mitchelstown turn-off on the bypass at around 9am when the incident happened.
There was severe black ice on the M8 this morning, and the lowest ground temperatures overnight in Cork were recorded at Moorepark, which had a reading of -9 degrees.
Met Éireann are predicting that air temperatures could fall to -7 degrees tonight.
In Cork city, high areas were affected by icy conditions, with bus services not serving SilverSprings, Killeens or Maryborough Hill this morning.
