The Social Protection Minister Eamon O'Cuiv has said by-election results "do not always reflect national trends" or what will happen at the next General Election.

The Social Protection Minister Eamon O'Cuiv has said by-election results "do not always reflect national trends" or what will happen at the next General Election.

Mr O'Cuiv was speaking in Co. Donegal this afternoon, where the count for the delayed Donegal by-election is taking place.

Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty looks set to take the seat in the by-election which has seen Fianna Fáil's vote halve since the last General Election.

Speaking in Stranorlar this afternoon, Eamon O' Cuiv said people "must not look too deeply into the result".
