A tradesman is to lead a protest from Co Limerick to the Green Party headquarters in Dublin this Monday over a controversial new vehicle tax.

Painter and decorator, Tom Fitzgerald from Askeaton, believes the commercial vehicle tax will cripple small businessmen like himself.

Under the law, anyone with a commercial vehicle is not supposed to use it for personal means, but according to Mr Fitzgerald, that's simply impossible in these harsh economic times.

He wants the Green Party to provide an amnesty on the law to allow time for further consideration of its impact.

"People are afraid. (They) don’t understand it," he said. "This protest will be the start of something."
