Johnny Golden will be laid to rest this afternoon after a funeral service at the Church of Ireland in Killygar, Co Cavan, where he served as a sexton for several years.

Hundreds of mourners are expected to attend the funeral of the pensioner who was described as a "gentle, sweet-natured man" and a talented musician.

The 73-year-old died at Cavan General Hospital last week from injuries sustained in an attack at his home in Doogarry on September 7.

A 17-year-old man was arrested and released without charge last month, and gardaí have issued a renewed appeal for information about the case.

They want to speak to anyone who may have seen something suspicious near Doogarry on the Leitrim-Cavan border on September 6 and 7 last.
