Man charged in connection with serious assault on Polish man

A man has today been charged following an assault in Dublin which has left a 27-year-old Polish man fighting for his life.

Lukasz Rzeszutko (aged 27), who had been on his way to work nearby when the incident occurred, was attacked at the Newtown Industrial Estate in Coolock, north Dublin in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Gardaí found him on a road in the Newtown Industrial Estate in Coolock at around 5am on Saturday morning.

He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Beaumont Hospital where he is said to be in a critical condition.

Gardaí arrested three men in connection with the incident and one of them appeared at Dublin District Court today in connection with the attack.

Detective Garda Niall Gibbs told Judge David McHugh that the accused Edward Byrne (aged 20), with an address at a Dublin 8 YMCA hostel, was arrested on Sunday evening and made “no reply” when he was charged with assault causing harm.

Defence solicitor John Feeney told Judge McHugh that his client, who was dressed in a grey hooded top, black tracksuit bottoms and white trainers and remained silent during the proceedings, was deferring a bail application until Friday next.

Judge McHugh said that given the seriousness of the charges he was remanding the accused in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on October 8.

Legal aid was granted after the court heard that the defendant was unemployed.
