'Gangland gun attack' condemned

There was condemnation today after a failed gun attack in Dublin.

The attempted shooting was blamed on gangland criminals.

Gardaí would only say they were investigating a firearms incident, after claims the man targeted in the attack had not reported the incident.

The attack was launched in the Killester area this morning, but the gunman is said to have fled the scene after his weapon jammed.

Gardaí later issued an appeal for information regarding a male who was seen leaving the area on foot in the direction of Howth Road at the time of the incident.

He is described as 5’11” in height, of heavy build, and was wearing navy tracksuit bottoms and a navy hooded top.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Raheny Garda Station on 01 6664300 or the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111.

Labour Councillor Aodhan O Riordain said: “I am disgusted to learn of the latest gun-related incident in my constituency of Dublin North Central in Killester this morning.

“This particular area is an extremely quiet residential area and the actions that took place there this morning are absolutely outrageous.

“It is clear now that under the government’s watch, a new generation of gun-wielding criminals are operating with impunity with no respect for life or law and order.”

He added: “Meanwhile, government cutbacks in education and community infrastructure are hitting hardest in areas that need the support to turn young people away from lives of crime. I condemn this attack absolutely and I urge anyone with any information to assist the Garda with their inquiries.”
