Council to press ahead with Poolbeg incinerator

Dublin City Council has moved to press ahead with the construction of the controversial Poolbeg incinerator, despite alleged efforts by Environment Minister John Gormley to stop it.

All parties behind the incinerator have been waiting on Minister Gormley to approve a foreshore licence before proceeding, leading to speculation that the Minister was stalling the project, which is in his own constituency.

However, in a surprise move, Dublin City Council has now issued a compulsory purchase order for 2.5 acres of land in Poolbeg, which means it can proceed without the foreshore licence.

Construction of the incinerator could go ahead by the end of the year.
