Call for overhaul of prison remission system
The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre has called on the Government to overhaul the prison remission system.
It comes ahead of the release this week of convicted rapist Larry Murphy, who has served 10 and a half years of a 15-year sentence for the brutal rape of a woman in the Wicklow mountains.
It is not known if the 45-year-old underwent treatment offered to all sex offenders.
"We are calling on the Government to legislate for remission to be linked with participation and cooperation in rehabilitation programmes," said DRCC Chief Executive Ellen O’Malley-Dunlop.
She said that "high-risk" sex offenders should not be released until it is possible to assess that there is a reduction in the risk of their reoffending.
