A man in his 60's is recovering in hospital after being attacked when he confronted an intruder in his home.

At 11.30pm on Friday night a farmer in his 60s was stabbed in the back after he confronted an intruder in his home near Crookstown, a village on the Cork to Macroom road.

He was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery and is said to be in a stable condition.

A 29-year-old man from Cork city was arrested a short distance from the scene of the attack some hours later and brought to Macroom Garda Station for questioning.

He was released without charge yesterday morning and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
