Irish man confirmed drowned in Australia

A 27-year-old man from the North has drowned after going swimming in a remote area of Australia.

It is understood he was with a group of 20 friends when he entered the water in Kakadu National Park, 171 kilometres south east of Darwin, in the Northern Territory.

His body was found last night.

A post mortem is to be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.

Louise Jorgenson, Duty Superintendent for the Northern Territory Police, said the man is not believed to have been a strong swimmer.

"He entered the water… about 20 metres out he got into difficulty and he disappeared beneath the surface," Jorgenson said.

She said that his companions had been fearful of entering the water due to signs warning of crocodiles in the area.

Howeve, she said, it appeared that he was not taken by a crocodile but got into some difficulty while swimming.
