Taoiseach calls on Callely to consider his position
Taoiseach Brian Cowen said today that Senator Ivor Calley should consider his position as a member of the Seanad, though he admits he is powerless to dismiss him.
Mr Cowen says he also notes Senator Callely's commitment to repay any expenses wrongly claimed.
Addressing the issue of Senator Callely's expenses, Brian Cowen said that he noted the on-record assurance of Mr Calley gave last month to repay anything claimed inappropriately.
The Taoiseach says Senator Callely must comply with the recommendations of the Committee of his peers and serve the 20-day suspension from the Seanad.
However, he said that he is not in a position to dismiss Ivor Calley from the Seanad, even though he is a Taoiseach's nominee, adding his continued membership of the Senate is a matter for him to consider at this point in time.
Mr Cowen says his position on Senator Calley was clear when he was dismissed from the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party.
