Two still held in connection with Dublin murder

Two people remain in Garda custody this morning in connection with the shooting dead of a man in Dublin yesterday.

A 15-year-old youth and a man in his late 20s were detained last night after the killing of 32-year-old Stephen Byrne in broad daylight. They are being held at Store Street Garda Station.

The killing happened outside St Laurence O'Toole Church on Sheriff Street in Dublin's north inner city just before 5pm yesterday evening.

Mr Byrne, who lives in the area, was lured from his house and then chased before being shot at least twice.

Armed gardaí who have been patrolling the area for some years were quick on the scene. The victim was rushed to hospital but later died.

He is believed to be the fifth victim of a bloody feud between two major crime factions in the north inner city.

Gardaí believe both factions were once part of the same gang, but it split when the gang's leader and now convicted rapist Christy Griffin was first accused of rape.
