PSNI investigate Armagh explosion
Police are investigating the cause of an explosion in the North tonight.
There are no reports of any injuries following the incident in Carrickrovaddy Road, Newtownhamilton, Co Armagh.
The explosion was reported shortly before 5.30pm.
A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman said an investigation is underway.
âThere are no reports of any injuries at this time,â she said.
It is understood the explosion took place under a bridge on the small rural road between Belleek and Newtownhamilton.
SDLP Assembly member Dominic Bradley condemned those behind the incident.
âIt looks as if it was aimed at police travelling through the area,â he said.
âThe bridge itself is not a major piece of infrastructure which wouldnât have been targeted, so they must have been using the bridge to disguise the device for passing police.â
Hitting out at those responsible, Mr Bradley added: âIt was wrong in the past and itâs wrong today. It serves no purpose. The vast majority of people in south Armagh reject this sort of activity.â
