Man shot dead in suspected gangland hit

A man was murdered today in a suspected gangland hit after being shot at least twice in the head.

The killing took place in an industrial estate in the Finglas area of north Dublin just after midday.

Gardaí said the area around Dubber Lane and the Grove estate had been sealed off and checkpoints set up.

The shooting follows the murder of two men and the wounding of a 16-year-old in a suspected drug-related gun attack last month.

Gardaí said the shooting took place at 12.10pm.

“The man was pronounced dead having sustained a number of gunshot wounds. The scene is currently being preserved,” a Garda spokesman said.

Detectives appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time of the attack to contact officers in Finglas Garda Station.

It has been reported that two gunmen wearing balaclavas used a silver Audi saloon as their getaway car.

However gardaí say they are not yet satisfied that the vehicle found on nearby Carrigallen road is connected to teh attack.

Dr Bill Tormey, a councillor who lives about a quarter of a mile from the scene, said the bloody gangland feud was striking fear into the neighbourhood.

“This reminds me of the Cold War – it’s mutually assured destruction,” he said.

“The two sides have their nuclear bombs – their firearms. A truce needs to be called.”

Dr Tormey said there was constant talk about relatives of victims threatening reprisals, leaving innocent residents fearful of the next shooting.

“It’s endless. An awful lot of people are very afraid,” he said.

The Fine Gael councillor called for both undercover and high-profile visible security to be stepped up in Finglas and Ballymun over the coming days.
