An unemployed Swords mechanic who was caught moving drugs twice within two weeks in order to clear his drug debt has been sentenced to eight years with the last two years suspended.

Shane Flanagan (aged 31) of Mooretown Avenue in pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of cocaine for sale or supply on April 16, 2009 in a car park in Swords and possession of a second larger cache of cocaine valued at €212,000 at Bothar na Breena Road on May 1, 2009.

Garda Liam Clancy told Mr Tony McGillicuddy BL, prosecuting, that he noticed a red Nissan Micra car parked in a hotel car park in Swords.

He said the driver of the car, Flanagan, appeared very nervous and after Gda Clancy conducted a search of the car he found a small bag of cocaine in the driver’s side door.

A second bag containing 248 grammes of cocaine was located under the driver’s seat.

Flanagan, who had a €400 a week drug habit, admitted he was asked to bring the drugs to the location and was to meet someone to hand the drugs over to in order to clear off his drug debt.

Gda Clancy told Mr McGillicuddy that on May 1, 2009 gardaí followed a taxi acting suspiciously on Bothar na Breena Road.

The driver of a red Nissan Micra passed the taxi and gave a signal to the taxi driver. When gardaí stopped both cars they found a bag close to the ditch containing 3,029 grams of cocaine valued at €212,000.

Flanagan admitted he was asked to deliver the drugs but did not realise how much drugs were in the bag.

“He dug a very deep hole on the first occasion and this is a stark example of a downward spiral moving from a user to transporting and moving the drugs,” said Judge Tony Hunt.

“I accept he was assisting at a very low level and he probably did not have a choice on the amount of drugs on the second journey. One offence led to another,” said Judge Hunt.
