Senator asked to withdraw Callely 'fraud' remarks

A Fine Gael senator has been asked to withdraw remarks suggesting a "fraud" may have been committed in relation to Ivor Callely's expenses.

There is growing disquiet over a statement made by Senator Callely yesterday in which he said he had broken no rules in relation to €80,000 in expenses he claimed from an address in Cork, despite the fact that his constituency office is in Dublin.

Opposition parties have called on him to make a second, more comprehensive statement on the issue.

But in the Seanad, Fine Gael Senator Eugene Regan was ruled out of order for suggesting a fraud may have been committed.
