Search begins for missing fisherman

A major search operation was under way today after a fisherman disappeared when his boat capsized.

Two men were on board the small lobster vessel when it overturned off Rosslare, Co Wexford.

One man managed to swim ashore to Greenore Point and raise the alarm at 4.30am.

The Irish Coast Guard said a full search is under way involving its helicopter based in Waterford and several local lifeboat and coast guard crews.

“The naval vessel the LE Ciara is also on scene and the naval divers are heading down as well,” said a spokesman.

Weather and sea conditions are said to be calm in the area, with visibility good.

“We will continue to search throughout the day and for the next couple of days if he isn’t found,” he added.
