Gardaí investigating a fatal accident in Cork city which claimed the life of a teenager have arrested a man in connection with the collision.

The crash happened on Harbour View Road in Knocknaheeny at 11.30pm when two cars travelling in the same direction were in collision.

A 16-year-old passenger in the first car, a Ford Mondeo, was seriously injured and removed by ambulance to hospital, where he later died.

Four other occupants of the car were removed to hospital and one of them, a man in his early 20s was described as being in a critical condition.

Gardaí arrested a man in his late 20s at the scene. Its understood he was the driver of the second car, a Golf.

He was arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and brought to Gurranebraher garda station for questioning.

Gardaí closed off the road to allow a garda forensic crash investigator examine the scene while both vehicles remain at the scene this morning.

Any witnesses are asked to contact Gurranabraher gardaí.
