Polish victim's family 'left with a screwdriver in their hearts'

A Dublin teenager has received two life sentences for what was today described as the "brutal and savage" murders of two Polish men.

Nineteen-year-old David Curran of Lissadel Green, Drimnagh stabbed Pawel Kalite and Marius Szwajkos in the head with a screwdriver outside their home on Benbulben Road on February 23, 2008.

David Curran was led away by prison officers this morning for two murders described by the judge as "profoundly sinister".

Handing down two concurrent life sentences, Mr Justice Liam McKechnie noted the lethal accuracy used by the teenager to stab Pawel Kalite and Marius Swajkos in the head,

He called the attack "brutal, savage" and said it could be described as "sadistic" adding that it "leaves a chilling and deeply disturbing feeling as to what type of person would do this" and all because of a meaningless fight outside the chipper minutes earlier involving Pawel Kalite and friends of David Curran.

In their victim impact statements, Marius Swajkos's family said they have gone through hell, while Pawel Kalite's family said they had "been left with a screwdriver in their hearts".
