The Dáil is to hold a debate tonight on the state of Irish prisons in the wake of the resignation of the governor of the Women's prison in Mountjoy.

Kathleen McMahon - who was governor of the Dóchas centre for 10 years - stood down yesterday saying her position had become impossible.

Fine Gael's Justice Spokesman Charlie Flanagan - who put forward the motion - says it is vital for the Government to address the crisis in Irish prisons.
