The governor of Ireland's only women's prison has resigned saying her position became "completely impossible".

The governor of Ireland's only women's prison has resigned saying her position became "completely impossible".

Kathleen McMahon had been governor of the Dóchas centre in Dublin's Mountjoy for 10 years.

She said the centre was designed to treat women with dignity and respect, but predicts a number of factors, including overcrowding, will lead to a return to the days of depressed, bullied and self-mutilating inmates.
