Man appears in court on rape charge

A man has appeared in court charged with raping a woman in a public toilet in Kanturk, Co Cork.

The 35-year-old has been remanded in custody until next Wednesday having been brought before a special court sitting in the town last night.

The Polish national is charged with raping the woman in the public toilets on Church Street in Kanturk on March 9, 2010.

Dressed in a tracksuit amid tight security, he was brought before Kanturk District Court after 11pm last night.

Garda Tom O’Neill gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution informing the judge the accused replied "No" after the charge was put to him.

Gardaí are objecting to bail but Judge Tim Lucey decided to defer the issue until next Wednesday having heard the accused has very little money and has only been in Ireland a very short time.
