Hunt for gunmen after Dundalk murder

Detectives were hunting two gunmen today after a man was shot dead in Dundalk.

Seamus McMahon was visiting a house in Saltown when the pair burst in at around 7pm yesterday.

The men then shot Mr McMahon in the side before making their getaway.

The victim, who was in his 40s, was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda but died from his injuries shortly afterwards.

Detectives believe the men may have fled the scene in a white Toyota Corolla hatchback.

The area around the house was sealed off for a forensic examination and a post-mortem was also due to be carried out.

Local Green councillor Marianne Butler said the community was in shock after the attack, which took place in a new housing development on the outskirts of the border town.

“I can’t remember the last time there was a shooting here,” she said.

“My sympathies go out certainly to the families involved – it’s a very tragic incident.”

Gardai appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
