Controlled explosion carried out in Derry

A security alert in Magherafelt in Derry has ended after a controlled explosion was carried out on a viable device.

It was found just before 10am this morning in the Kirk Avenue area.

A number of people were evacuated from their homes and businesses.

The PSNI has condemned the incident saying it endangered the lives of those in the area and jeopardised the safety of police officers.
