Crystal maker closes with loss of 31 jobs

An Irish crystal maker whose glassware adorns mantelpieces the world over is to close, it was announced today.

Tyrone Crystal is to shut its factory in Dungannon with the loss of 31 jobs.

The announcement came after attempts to find a new buyer for the famous brand failed.

Crystal making tradition in Tyrone dates back more than two centuries and the factory has been trading for the last 40 years.

But a global drop in demand for fine ornaments and vases has prompted the closure.

“The company and its management wish to take this opportunity to thank its loyal workforce for their valued contribution over the years and for their support during this difficult period,” said a spokeswoman.
