Man pleads guilty to raping daughter
A Cork man in his 50s pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court today to raping and sexually assaulting his own daughter.
Mr Justice Paul Carney immediately ordered that the man’s name should be put on the Sex Offenders Register.
Sentencing was adjourned until June 2 to allow time for the preparation of a victim impact report on the victim, who is now aged 21.
Alice Fawsett, defence senior counsel, indicated that the defendant could be further arraigned on June 2 on 19 more counts of sexual assault. She said he would be pleading guilty to all of these offences.
Tim O’Leary prosecution senior counsel said there was no objection to the defence application to have the accused remanded on continuing bail for sentencing.
Mr Justice Carney said: “As the Director of Public Prosecutions is taking responsibility I remand him on bail.”
Under bail conditions he has to surrender his passport, sign daily at his local garda station and stay away from the family home.
Sergeant Derek Mulcahy who investigated the case will give evidence of the background to the offences when the case comes up for sentence in June.
The charges relate to a period between 2000 and 2009 when the complainant was aged between 11 and 20.
