Device fired at Armagh barracks

An explosive device was fired at a police station in the North tonight.

It did not hit the barracks at Craigavon, Co Armagh, and there were no reports of injuries, police said.

Last March, dissident republicans shot dead a policeman not far from the site of tonight’s attack and there has been an upsurge in paramilitary activity in recent weeks.

A nearby road was closed due to the separate discovery of a suspicious object.

The police station is in the Brownlow area of Craigavon, a sprawling urban centre of housing estates and roundabouts.

Pc Stephen Carroll was shot dead by the Continuity IRA in Craigavon last March.

Kieran Doherty, 31, was bound and shot by the Real IRA in Derry on Wednesday night.

He had served time in prison in the Republic of Ireland as a Real IRA member and his family claimed he had rebuffed MI5 attempts to recruit him.

On Monday night a 250lb car bomb caused damage to the wall and security hut at Newry courthouse, Co Down.
