Government committee calls for extension of moratorium on repossessions

A cross-party Oireachtas Committee is calling for the moratorium on banks repossessing homes to be extended from 12 to 24 months.

A cross-party Oireachtas Committee is calling for the moratorium on banks repossessing homes to be extended from 12 to 24 months.

The Social and Family Affairs Committee is also recommending that the moratorium be widened to include all lenders - not just AIB and Bank of Ireland - the capitalised banks.

The proposals are contained in a report - examining the high level of debt in Irish society and how to protect those at risk of defaulting on mortgages.
