Some 31 jobs are to be axed with the closure of a pharmaceutical company in Roscrea, Co Tipperary, it emerged today.

Taro Pharmaceuticals, the Irish arm of the Israeli drug company, has announced that it is to cease operations in the town.

The former Antigen Factory announced the closure despite a number of measures in recent months to save jobs at the facility.

Once regarded as the flagship of employment in the Mid-West region, the closure of the facility has been described by one local councillor as a "psychological blow" for the town.

North Tipperary Fine Gael TD Noel Coonan meanwhile said the closure was another example of how the employment issue is not being addressed in the area.
