Man shot dead in gangland attack

A man has been shot dead in Dublin’s latest gangland-style gun attack.

The victim, in his late 20s, was gunned down in Coolock in the north of the city at 10.20pm last night.

The shooting on the Ferrycarrig Road in Priorswood is the fourth gun-related death of 2010 after three men were killed last week in two separate attacks in the capital.

Paddy Mooney, 58, and Brendan Molyneaux, in his mid-40s, were gunned down in a flats complex close to the city centre last Sunday.

Just a day earlier the body of 29-year-old John Paul Joyce, a major drug-trafficking figure, was found shot dead in a ditch behind Dublin Airport.

Fears of further bloodshed in the wake of last week’s attacks prompted Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy to deploy the force’s Emergency Response Unit (ERU) onto the capital’s streets.

Meanwhile, the scene of the Coolock shooting remained sealed off as gardaí carried out a full technical examination.

The state pathologist has also been informed.
