A windsurfer who got into difficulty off Salthill Promenade in Galway today has been rescued.

A windsurfer who got into difficulty off Salthill Promenade in Galway today has been rescued.

The woman was surfing with four others when a sudden deterioration in weather conditions knocked her off her surfboard.

A member of the public who was watching from the promenade contacted the Irish Coastguard.

The Galway RNLI got to the scene within minutes and located two windsurfers, one of whom was in difficulty in the water.

They took the woman on board and brought her back to Galway Docks where she was transferred to University Hospital Galway sffering mild hypothermia.

The other windsurfer was able to make his own way safely back to Salthill along with the other members of the group.
