A man and woman have been arrested after the death of a 10-day-old baby boy in Lusk, north county Dublin.

The infant from Navan, Co Meath was pronounced dead last Friday shortly after he was taken to hospital with what is thought to have been a head injury.

A man and woman in their mid-20s were arrested in the town last night and were taken to separate garda stations for questioning.

In the hours before he died the baby and his family were visiting a house in Lusk, north Co Dublin.

After his death at Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda an investigation was launched and the property on Scholars Walk was sealed off for an extensive forensic examination.

The man is being detained under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act in Whitehall garda station. The woman is being held at Balbriggan garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Results of a post mortem on the infant have not yet been released.
