Devolution in the North is 'realistic'

The Taoiseach and the British Prime Minister have said the devolution of policing and justice powers in the North remains "realistic and achievable".

Brian Cowen and Gordon Brown said, despite recent events involving the First Minister Peter Robinson and his wife Iris, they believe any outstanding issues between the Northern parties are capable of resolution.

The two leaders - who held talks in Downing Street this morning - said while engagement is taking place between the parties they are available to help bring the discussions to a successful conclusion.

In a statement they said the completion of the devolution of policing and justice powers will play a vital role in ensuring the stability of the Northern Ireland Executive and Assembly.
