Defence Forces on standby in 17 barracks

The Defence Forces are on standby in 17 barracks around the country to provide emergency assistance to local authorities, a spokesperson said tonight.

Although not equipped with specialist snow clearing equipment, the Defence Forces can provide 4 x4 trucks, jeeps and personnel to move people and equipment as requested, according to a statement.

They are currently providing an increased number of Air Ambulance tasks for the HSE.

Spokesman Captain Pat O'Connor said it is up to local authorities to call on them as needed.

Personnel are "ready, willing and able to go", Capt O'Connor said.

"It's a matter now to see if the County Councils actually need our help."
