Ireland's external debt - the gross level of debt owed by the Government, residents and financial institutions in the country - has fallen by €51bn to €1.64 trillion over the past year.

Ireland's external debt - the gross level of debt owed by the Government, residents and financial institutions in the country - has fallen by €51bn to €1.64 trillion over the past year.

Government borrowing is the only category to show a significant increase.

Exchequer debt grew by €22bn to more than €73bn at the end of September, according to figures published today by the Central Statistics Office.
